I thought Bill would run to the phone the second Poe left, but he didn’t. He sat in the living room and stared out the window. The city lights twinkled and winked and were easily mesmerizing. I didn’t know all that much about Bill, but I knew he was a man who didn’t like surprises. He didn’t like to think he was two steps ahead, only to find out he was a mile behind. I understood that.

While my job often had me going in a million directions, Bill’s didn’t. He’d worked for powerful men his whole life and where they pointed, he went. I didn’t want to tell Bill that the reason I was told to do this mission with him wasn’t because I’d taken families down before, but because I was always the leader. Often making split second decisions. If I told him that, he’d assume I was calling him a meathead. He was anything but. He’d surprised me so many times in the last few days.

When we worked together before, it was more Bill’s speed. Go here, do that, get it done. He excelled, and I learned more about the way he worked in that time. He had no idea how I worked. He saw me how everyone else saw me. Beautiful, vain, and selfish. That was the person I wanted the world to see. Mace was my alias. Bill didn’t have one. He was born Bill and he would die Bill.

“Do you want any more Chinese?” I asked, hoping to shake him out of his funk.

“Nah.” He didn’t turn in my direction. His lips barely moved.

“We can watch a movie or something if you want.” Why did I give a shit if he brooded out the fucking window?

“I’m good.” Still as a statue.

“Bill, snap the fuck out of it!”

That got him to turn to me, the bright glare of his anger rivaling the city lights.

“Snap out of it? This was supposed to be a family wipe out and it has turned into a game of Clue wrapped up in a game of Life and lit on fire. Twists and fucking turns.”

He felt out of control. I figured as much. “Yeah, this is pretty much another day at the office for me, Billy Boy.”

He stood and when he clenched his fists, the delicious twitch of his muscles made my mouth water. Jesus, what was wrong with me?

“Don’t call me that.”

“Did you think Zagan was going to sprinkle some breadcrumbs down and have us follow them right to where he was? Did you think he’d wrap up his organization in a big red bow and hand it to you? That’s not how this works.” I took two steps, so now I was just a foot away from him. His eyes sparkled with fury and I knew I was seconds from either being punched or fucked.

“Your boss is in hiding because Zagan has made himself unpredictable. Christopher is smart enough to recognize when hiding is the best bet. But let me ask you this.
